Our Year 10, Year 11 and Post 16 students have been getting busy in the kitchen, developing practical cooking skills that will support them both now and in their future lives.
The cooking sessions provide students with the opportunity to learn how to prepare food, follow recipes and work safely in a kitchen environment. But, as with so much of our practical learning, the benefits go far beyond the finished dish.
Students are developing important independent living skills, including planning, measuring, budgeting, using kitchen equipment safely and understanding the importance of nutrition and healthy choices.
For our Post 16 students in particular, these are valuable skills as they prepare for increased independence and their next steps beyond school. Being able to prepare a meal, understand food choices and confidently manage a kitchen are practical skills that can make a real difference to everyday life.
For our younger students, the sessions provide an opportunity to build confidence and develop skills that they can continue to practise and use as they get older.
Most importantly, cooking gives students the chance to see a tangible result from their efforts. There is a real sense of achievement in sitting down and enjoying something that you have prepared yourself.
From learning the basics to becoming more confident and independent in the kitchen, our cooking sessions are helping students develop skills for life beyond the classroom!
