The Nurture Group attended a hands-on clay figure making experience at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in Hanley based on the historic Frank Scott Collection of 26 rolled pipe-clay figures, which he collected in the 1930s. These figures were originally crafted by artists like William Ruscoe at the Burslem School of Art.
The students used the original figures as inspiration for their own designs and imagination. They all created very different figures, each one with their own personality and appearance. They all displayed great patience in the creation of their own works, some even giving the characters names!
Whilst in the museum, the students took the opportunity to view the museum’s ‘Favourite Things’ collection. This display brings together items handpicked by the museum staff and archives team. The staff members have delved through the archives and selected an item which is important to them. Each item has a label, sharing the reason for the selection as well as background information.
While the galleries are temporarily closed, the display offered the chance for the students to see – and say hello to – some of the museums most beloved objects.
