Travel Training

Today marked another exciting step towards independence for our Post-16 students as part of their Preparation for Adulthood programme. The group headed out to Milton, where they had the opportunity to plan and complete a real-life bus journey using public transport — a vital life skill for many of our young people.

Before catching the bus, students were tasked with reading and interpreting a local bus timetable, identifying the correct route and planning their journey from start to finish. They considered timings, fares, and stops, building their confidence in navigating public transport systems — something many of them had never done independently before.

Each student was supported in handling money and paying for their own fare, encouraging personal responsibility and real-world money management. Staff were on hand to guide where needed, but the emphasis remained on enabling the students to make decisions for themselves.

This travel training session is part of our wider focus on Preparation for Adulthood, where we support students to gain the skills and confidence they need to live as independently as possible. Learning how to use public transport safely and confidently is a crucial part of that journey — opening up access to further education, employment, and social opportunities.

We’re incredibly proud of how well each student adapted to the challenge. From reading timetables to paying their fare and travelling as a group, they showed maturity, focus, and a real enthusiasm for learning. Today wasn’t just about catching a bus — it was about building confidence, independence, and belief in their own abilities.

We look forward to more travel training adventures in the weeks ahead!
