Andy Flowers from Stoke Spitfires lead a PE session for the students this week. Stoke Spitfires is a wheelchair basketball team based in our city.
The Stoke Spifires are an amateur team, currently competing in the National League Third Division Central. They play and train at Ormiston Sir Stanley Matthews Academy. The team is made up of a mixture of wheelchair users and able bodied athletes.
Andy brought to the session a number of wheelchairs and taught the students the basics of the game. He then organised a short match, enabling the students and staff to compete against each other. The students commented on how physically demanding it was and the effort needed to control the wheelchair. The students and staff struggled to co-ordinate the chair and scoring in the hoop. However, they rose to the challenge and enjoyed the game against each other. The red team eventually won, but with a little help from Andy himself!
