Nurture have been incredibly privileged to take part in a special Waymaking session with international sound artist Jason Singh.

Jason has previously worked with a range of artists such Snoop Dog to performing sets at Glastonbury and WOMAD.  He has created specially commissioned music for Chester Zoo, the BBC and Selfridges department stores.  He has also worked with Brian Eno.

“Jason gave the perfect performance to illustrate what I always want to say about Art: it’s about making things that create feelings in people, important feelings that they might otherwise forget about.”– Brian Eno

Jason has been working with participants and stake holders in Staffordshire Moorland’s Waymaking group to create a specially commissioned piece of music using the sounds of nature.

Nurture met Jason at Stockton Brook Water Works and used professional recording equipment to record the sounds of nature.  The students put waterproof recording devices into water, and used twigs and pebbles to create different sounds, which they then recorded.  They recorded the noises made by trees using digitally sensitive recoding equipment. They also recorded noises made by plants and trees, using their hands to make the plants move and recording the different effects of this.

Finally, back in the Water Works the students used the equipment to listen to the sounds made by everyday technology, such as phones.  They discussed the influence of 5G on nature and what noises were being transmitted which could not be heard by the human ear.  Everyone was shocked to hear the different noises made by phones when they appeared to be inactive.

Jason used the sound recordings made by Nurture and other Waymaking participants to create a piece of music which you can hear below.
