Sporting Stars Academy recently held a Careers Day designed to help our students explore the many different pathways available to them and start thinking seriously about their next steps.
Year 10 spent the morning at Port Vale FC, getting a glimpse of the wide range of jobs that keep a professional football club running.
They found out about roles in areas such as catering, media, groundskeeping, maintenance and club operations, seeing how each department plays its part on a match day and throughout the week. They were able to ask questions and find out about how they can work in a variety of careers in the sports sector.
Students also learned more about Port Vale’s community work, including coaching programmes and charity projects that support local people and use football as a tool for positive change. The students learnt how they can help their community and how volunteering can improve their own job prospects.
In school, Year 11 took part in a carousel of careers activities focused on preparation for life after Year 11.
Previously, in this term, the Year 11 students visited our local post-16 providers in order to get an understanding of the options available to them. All students received personalised support applying for college courses, which meant that the majority of students were able to complete applications to the colleges of their choice. They also took part in practice interviews with a member of staff from Stoke City FC. This was really useful preparation as each student was given individual feedback regarding their strengths and weaknesses. Once these activities had been completed, the students began to write their own career plans and wrote CVs, identifying the skills and experiences they can offer future employers or education providers.
Post-16 students have continued to take part in assemblies with external visitors, giving the students guidance on future career plans. This week, a manager in the residential care sector. The students have also had an assembly with Andrew Fish at KEcoaches to give the students guidance about working in public transport, such as driving buses or coaches.
Nurture completed a variety of tasks, such as completing CVs and action plans. They were able to talk about their plans for the future and seek guidance from staff.
The Careers Day provided all year groups with the opportunity to connect their interests with real-world opportunities and build confidence in the choices ahead of them.
