Celebrating Black History Month at Our School
This October, Sporting Stars Academy has been celebrating Black History Month – a time to reflect on the incredible contributions, history, and culture of Black people across the world. It has been a wonderful opportunity for us to learn, create, and experience new things.
Throughout the month, we explored the heritage and traditions of Black culture in many exciting ways. We learned about inspirational historical figures, whose achievements and struggles have shaped the world we live in today. Their stories encouraged us to think about the importance of equality, resilience, and respect for all cultures.
We also had the chance to celebrate through food and creativity. We have been enjoying foods from different countries, like African sweet bread with peanut butter or chocolate spread with mango and dates. Jamaican patties for lunch, and other snacks throughout the month. Black History Month gives us a chance to experience new flavours and think about how food connects to history and identity. In art, we created and decorated our own African tribal masks, inspired by traditional designs, patterns, and colours. This helped us appreciate the significance of art in telling stories and preserving culture.
As part of our celebrations, we took Nurture on an exciting visit to the Potteries Museum, where we saw the Fragmented Truth exhibition. This gave us a deeper understanding of how history can be told through objects, art, and stories, and reminded us how important it is to keep these histories alive and remembered.
Overall, Black History Month has been an inspiring journey of learning, reflection, and creativity for our school. We celebrated not only the past but also the richness of Black culture today, and the importance of building a future where everyone’s stories are valued and heard.
