Our Nurture class was lucky enough to take part in a career’s workshop at Sandyford fire station today. The students learnt about the history of the fire service and how the equipment and technology have changed over time. They were then able to tour the fire station. The students were then able to sit in a fire engine and learn about the equipment which the fire brigade use. The final activity in the practical session was to complete some training exercises. They had to drag a 55kg dummy across the yard. This was to stimulate rescuing an injured person. They then learnt how to use the fire hose and faced the challenge of carrying two across the yard. They learnt you need to be very physically fit as the equipment was incredibly heavy!
Into the classroom the students learnt about the process of a call out. They also had the opportunity to try on the uniform and helmet. The students discussed how difficult it might be wearing the uniform while running and carrying equipment. The firefighters also explained to the students the importance of understanding science and chemical reactions.
The firefighters explained the recruitment process and the qualifications needed to be accepted into the fire brigade. The firefighters also explained to the students other, auxiliary, jobs available to people.
We are very grateful to the fire service of Stoke on Trent for giving us this opportunity to understand the job of a firefighter.
